Why does my iPhone mess with my photos when I post them?

Once you upload your photo, the platform’s algorithm takes over and processes it. That’s why it looks different.

It’s probably Instagram’s compression messing it up.

The wavy effect is called moire. It happens when high-resolution images are downscaled. Instagram’s compression likely causes this.

Actually, moire is a type of aliasing that happens when high frequencies are under-sampled. You can downscale without moire, as shown in other parts of the image. The issue is Instagram’s algorithm sampling lower than the frequency of the lines in your jumper.

Your iPhone isn’t doing anything. Instagram’s compression ruins your image.

This is just Instagram’s image compression.

That might be caused by the moire effect from the platform’s algorithm if it wasn’t there originally.

It might be because your photo app shows it in HDR, but Instagram converts it to SDR when you post.

No, I turned off that setting as soon as I got the phone.

Why not explain instead of downvoting the person who asked? This forum should be for discussing and helping. It’s funny and sad at the same time. Let’s keep this a place where people feel comfortable asking questions.

@Denali
It’s wild. All they said was that it’s not due to HDR view. Feels like people here would rather downvote than contribute something useful.

@Denali
I was surprised by the downvotes too. It’s like they think Apple is their family business. I honestly don’t care about defending them.

This forum always has die-hard Apple fans who won’t admit the company could be wrong. I worked there for years, and the internal culture isn’t what they imagine.

What’s likely happening is your iPhone uses wide colour ranges, but Instagram converts it to web-safe colours with fewer options.

When you post photos, social media platforms compress them to save on storage costs.

Your photos don’t look identical. The angle and arm position differ slightly. Maybe Instagram used a different lens or ignored some image processing.

They’re actually the same photo. I tried posting it again, but it still happened, so I gave up.

Check your Instagram settings to ensure you’ve enabled the highest-quality upload option.

Your iPhone doesn’t know you’re posting a picture. The platform is responsible for the changes.
