Why are there lines in my photo

I took this photo on my iPhone 14 Pro with RAW mode on, and I noticed these faint lines right below the window. I haven’t seen anything like this before. Anyone know what might be causing it?

Those lines are likely a moire effect because you’re shooting through the layers of airplane glass, and RAW mode on the iPhone 14 Pro brings out more detail. Try changing your angle next time or use a different mode to avoid it.

But why are the lines showing up under the window and to the side?

@Cleo
No, I don’t think it’s that. It’s more likely sensor banding or streaking. I’ve taken plenty of RAW photos from a plane window with my 14 Pro Max and never had this issue.

@Cleo
Thanks for explaining! I’m also confused why the lines are only under the window. Plus, I didn’t notice them in the preview before taking the photo. Guess it only shows up in the final shot.

It’s rolling shutter banding because of the LEDs in the plane and the iPhone’s fast shutter speed, which doesn’t sync with their refresh rate. This kind of thing usually happens with electronic shutters. It’s not moire or any other effect, since it’s showing outside the glass too.

Edit: The light is more noticeable around the glass because that’s where the LED lights are reflecting off the surface.

Could be rolling shutter, interference, or maybe sensor damage. Since you don’t see it in every photo, it’s probably nothing serious.

EDIT: Autocorrect strikes again.

Not sure about the lines, but Turkish Airlines is amazing .

Absolutely, one of the top airlines out there.

Unless your flight gets delayed or canceled. Then brace yourself for their customer service.

That’s pretty much how it goes with any airline ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Were there any artificial lights in the cabin? Could be rolling shutter.

Can’t recall exactly, but I think they were on the whole time except for takeoff and landing. This photo was taken mid-flight.

Could it be a sensor shift problem?

Is it something that would only happen in certain cases? I took more RAW shots afterward and didn’t see the lines again.

Might be the plane vibrations affecting the camera’s stabilization.

I found someone with a similar issue, but I couldn’t figure out how to turn Smart HDR off.

Why not ask the person who designed the window?

It could be due to how light travels through the layers of plastic or polycarbonate in airplane windows. The material stretches during production, and the lines might appear because light passes through sections with different densities.
