What is up with the hate for the IPad 10th Gen

I previously owned several iPad models including the 2018 iPad Pro, M1 iPad Pro, and M2 iPad Pro. I sold my M2 last year since I didn’t really need its high-end features. I mostly use my iPad for watching movies and browsing the web, and I do some occasional video and photo editing. The iPad 10th Gen is priced at $349 on Amazon right now and I just got mine today. For entertainment purposes, this iPad does exactly what the M2 Pro does, the main difference is the lack of a ProMotion display. My M2 MacBook Air is my go-to for any work-related tasks. For me, the iPad is just for fun. This new iPad is perfect for people like me. I understand the complaints about the Apple Pencil charging method but I don’t use it much, I barely used it with my M2. Don’t be fooled by the negative reviews, this iPad is totally sufficient.

There’s really nothing wrong with the tablet itself. It’s just too close in price to the iPad Air, especially if you consider refurbished 4th generations, which makes it hard to justify buying the 10th Gen. Having this iPad doesn’t make you a bad person or anything. It’s just not the best financial choice for a modern design iPad. The way it charges the Apple Pencil is also a bit awkward.

Edit: $350 is a fair price. I’m assuming the iPad 10 is at its original MSRP. At almost $500, it’s not worth it, but $350 is a great deal for those not looking for Apple Pencil functionality.

This is the case with every Apple product line. The cheapest option is good enough to function but not worth the price. They want you to upgrade. Think of the iPhone SE, Watch SE, iPad 10, and base MacBook Pro with 8GB of RAM.

Every Apple product line except for the Vision.

Cannot wait for Apple Vision SE.

Yeah, it tends to create an uneven user experience.
The iPhone SE is a good value since everyone needs a phone, and it works well as a current phone.
The Watch SE really depends on the year.
The basic iPad is like a basic tablet, but the Air offers a much smoother experience for only 20% more.
The Macs can be tricky; the base ones are decent for simple tasks, but nearly everyone I know is frustrated by storage issues due to larger apps and system data. It’s aggravating when you need to keep deleting stuff because your Mac runs out of space.
Apple will do what it wants, but they could improve the experience at minimal cost and gain more customer goodwill. They don’t really face much competition, so they ignore that.

The iPhone SE is excellent! A fair price if you want an iPhone without unnecessary features that people rarely use.

The concept of the SE is great. The actual product isn’t. If they don’t refresh it to be a new mini, I’m losing faith. Or maybe offer an SE+ and use the 5.5" screen from previous Plus models. It’s insane that they charge so much for such a small phone and it has a terrible battery.

The iPhone SE was an incredible value. It probably competed too well with the iPhone mini, which is likely why they discontinued it.

I got my iPhone SE back in 2020, and it still does everything I need today. It remains one of the best value phones ever made, priced at £400, it had the best chip and offered 7 years of updates. Its smaller screen is preferable to me as it’s easier to handle and the older design is more durable. Fingerprint ID was a lot more convenient during COVID than Face ID.

The only downside is the camera, which isn’t awful.

Apple did this to themselves and likely saw it coming. They used the original SE to teach the market that a “mini iPhone” now meant a lower-tier budget model. They then tried to sell a Mini that cost as much as larger flagship models.

While I understand the logic behind it, the internals were improved, and not everyone focuses on that. Many people just compare it to what they got for cheap just a few months earlier. I’ve seen countless folks switch from the SE to SE2 and then wish they had the 12 or 13 Mini.
By the time they want to upgrade again, the Minis will be outdated.

I agree that it’s priced a bit too close to the Air. It should have been what the 9th Gen cost. Definitely a strange choice by Apple. But it’s absolutely worth it if you can grab a deal like I did on Amazon. Appreciate your insight.

Edit: What’s up with the downvotes? Lol. Oh well, it’s this forum after all.

Didn’t downvote, but it’s just a strange question; a quick look at any review of the 10th Gen would give you your answer faster and better than this post.
The 10th Gen mixes older iPad tech with some odd design choices and is priced too similarly to the iPad Air.
It’s a decent basic tablet at a lower price.
I think folks in tech dislike when Apple introduces this type of model because friends and family will complain for ages about the silly design choices.
Most likely they got the cheapest iPad instead of a modern one that offers a better experience for just a little more. That’s just my take.

You’re kind of answering your own question, which makes people wonder why you asked in the first place.

That’s true; owning it doesn’t mean you’re poor or anything.
The pencil charges awkwardly because of the need for adapters, but that’s been improved with the new Apple Pencil that uses USB-C.

The 4th Gen doesn’t have the M1 chip, so you miss out on Stage Manager. It was frustrating to have a nearly brand-new iPad not get a major feature in the update.
