What Can We Expect From Apples 2024 iPad Mini 7

Here… saved you a click
Apple is expected to launch a new iPad mini in 2024, probably in September or October. The new model will likely have an 8.3-inch display, an A17 Pro chip, and support for the Apple Pencil Pro. It might also come in new colors, feature a front-facing camera with HDR 4 support, and offer Wi-Fi 6E connectivity.

But Apple is likely not continuing with the N3B A17 series. The A18 would be cheaper to produce.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple used the slower chip in the Mini even if it costs more, just to protect their higher tier products.

I’m the idiot who just bought the old mini a few weeks ago before these rumors hit. You’re welcome.

You have a 14-day return policy.

That’s only a few weeks back. Even though I’m in this forum, I’m not the type who needs the newest device. As long as the mini 6 keeps running Logic well, it fulfills what I bought it for.

Higher tier iPads (even the Airs) are using M series chips. They don’t need to worry about cutting into the higher tier sales.

If they add ProMotion to the iPad mini, then that changes things.

It’s not that an A18 iPad Mini would perform like an Air or Pro. It’s that the difference in performance would get smaller. And maybe the price difference too (they might charge less for an A18 Mini than an A17 one).

It could shift a few people. I didn’t say it would fully take over.

It could shift a few people.

It could. But most people who buy iPad minis do so for the size, not the performance. If the performance is adequate, they won’t focus on the chip much.

I agree. They could put an M chip in the mini and it wouldn’t really harm the sales of either line. The mini really is based on being compact.

We use them in our office where people might otherwise use an iPhone, but a larger screen makes data tasks a lot easier like counting inventory, patient forms, etc. EDIT: especially where a full sized iPad is less practical due to being mobile, like moving with a patient.

Definitely. Plus, fitting an M series chip into the iPad mini could be tricky due to the smaller thermal space.

They might find a way, but the iPad mini doesn’t sell in large numbers for them to bother.

I totally agree. I have no interest in a huge iPad right now. I want the mini size and would probably even pay for one with an M chip just because I usually go all out. But there’s no way I’d buy a 3-4 year old mini 6 at full price.

Right, but even then the software is what slows things down, not the chip. I doubt 95% of regular users would notice a real difference between having an A17 chip or an M2 in an iPad mini.

There are real power upgrades, but they are the kind you wouldn’t notice in something that’s mainly for web browsing and note-taking.

The iPad mini fits right in a coat pocket so a lot of med students like them for their clinical rotations.

The Mini used to have the same processor as the Air.

But that was back when the phone processor wasn’t strong enough for an iPad. It now is.

I feel like iPhone processors have been good enough to run an iPad for a long time now. Which models are you guys talking about specifically?

Trying to remember the last time there was an iPhone chip that wasn’t able to run an iPad of the same generation.

Does anyone honestly compare performance stats? Saying M is better than a phone A chip seems like the level all consumers would think at.

I can’t see the Mini getting the latest mobile SOC and 8GB of RAM. But I’d love to be wrong.

Every time the mini has been launched, it has gotten the latest CPU, that’s just practical for Apple. It had the A15 in 2021 when the iPhone 13 came out, and the A12 in 2019 a few months after the iPhone XS. I doubt they would choose anything else for the Mini. The A16 is 2 years old, the A17 Pro is made more expensively, and the A17 doesn’t seem to exist? The A18 is clearly the best option.

It would be a bad move to hype AI at the event and then limit the mini.
