Apple is expected to launch a new iPad mini in 2024, probably in September or October. The new model will likely have an 8.3-inch display, an A17 Pro chip, and support for the Apple Pencil Pro. It might also come in new colors, feature a front-facing camera with HDR 4 support, and offer Wi-Fi 6E connectivity.

But Apple is likely not continuing with the N3B A17 series. The A18 would be cheaper to produce.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple used the slower chip in the Mini even if it costs more, just to protect their higher tier products.

I think they would use the A18 for AI.

I can’t see the Mini getting the latest mobile SOC and 8GB of RAM. But I’d love to be wrong.

There are rumors of an M4 version that’s one GPU core smaller than what’s in the current iPads, which would be perfect for a mini and keep all the iPads on the same chip, maybe even the same motherboard.

Why would they want to use an iPhone chip instead?

The iPad Air has an M2 though. They wouldn’t give a better chip to the iPad Mini than the Air. They treat the Mini like a smaller Air, so if it doesn’t get an M2, it’s going to end up being the A16, A17 Pro, or an A18/Pro.

Until recently, to get an M-class processor in an iPad, you had to buy an iPad Pro, so I don’t think we can assume the M chip has always been a deciding factor for size. It was only about two years ago when you could say that the Air needed to be smaller than the Pro.

It’s been two years since the fifth generation iPad Air. I wouldn’t call that recent. And the Air was just one year after the Pros got an M chip, with rumors building up that it would get one before its release. The Mini hasn’t had a single rumor about featuring an M chip.

All I want is more than 256GB of storage for my mini. It would make a great gaming tablet if it had 1TB.

It’s frustrating how the Mini feels like an afterthought.

Sadly, the Mini is probably bought like an afterthought. The Pro models are bought by tech fans like us here, while the regular iPad is usually scooped up by casual users.

TSMC wants to switch away from the money-losing N3B node since they are losing finances due to low yields in this process.

The next tier up would likely be the Air lineup which uses M chips…

I doubt a big cannibalization would happen. Just statistically speaking, the mini is still a niche product. And I really don’t think most users genuinely care about the chip in their device. People who frequent this forum might, but I don’t think if I asked my sister or mom about the chip in their iPad or iPhone, they would have a clue.

If they did it, it would likely be more about cost control. I’m not sure it would be really a concern about competition.

Thanks for the summary. I dislike long articles that don’t just go straight to the point.

Is this real and true? My heart can’t handle another iPad mini rumor just to have my hopes crushed again.

I had one for a long time with the apple pencil and I only recently found out about better pencil tips and screen protectors that feel like paper.

I started using it like a detailed bullet journal, and now my brain can’t do without it.

Did the display get bigger or is it the same as before?

Thanks for that

I hope to see a mini pro at some point. If it could just be a smaller iPad Pro that would be really nice. But with the new iPhone getting bigger on the pro Max, I think Apple is worried about them being too similar.

This would be my dream device. I love the size of the mini; anything larger just isn’t right for what I do.

I figure a good amount of miniaturization would be pretty tough to manage. The larger iPad Pro is thinner for a reason, so it might really be hard to execute. But I would prefer a current thickness with a fresh iPad Pro design and a better screen.

I don’t want the pro performance, I just want pro-level storage. It’s frustrating that Apple links them. It doesn’t take much more design to add 2TB of storage. It would be nice to have Thunderbolt, but that’s all I really need.

An iPad Mini Pro is the one thing that would make me spend my cash on Apple this year. That and some AirPod Pro 3.
