I can’t use my phone for more than 30 minutes without it getting so hot it burns my hands. It’s not even plugged in while I’m using it. This is really annoying, and I don’t know what to do. I have to keep putting it down because it’s uncomfortable to hold. I’m on iOS 17.6.1 now, but even when I was on 17.5.1, it was still happening. My battery is at 89%. Any advice?
I’d return it. My iPhone 15 Pro works fine unless it’s super hot outside (like over 100°F) and I’m recording video for more than 15 minutes.

It’s night here and I’m just watching YouTube, but it’s still burning up like an oven.

That sounds like a bad phone. I’d get it checked.

YouTube can heat up phones, especially iPhones and Androids, because it uses a lot of CPU and GPU power. Plus, your screen is on the whole time, which makes it hotter. Apps like TikTok and Facebook do the same thing.
When your phone gets too warm, it’s a good idea to stop the video, close all apps, and turn off the phone for a while to let it cool down. Apple would probably tell you to do the same.
It’s not necessarily the phone’s fault—it’s the apps. They make your phone work harder and heat up. Like any computer, when you stop what you’re doing, it cools down.

Are you serious? You’re telling people to stop watching videos on a phone that costs over $1k? That’s ridiculous. I’ve had older iPhones and cheaper Androids, and they never overheated doing basic stuff like this. If that’s your solution, this phone is really not worth the money. Some people just can’t admit that the 15 Pro Max has serious problems.

If your phone is too hot to hold, then stopping whatever you’re doing is the only way to cool it down. It’s simple—if it’s not working hard, it won’t heat up.
And by the way, expensive Samsung phones have the same issues. Their forums are full of people complaining about overheating.
It’s not just the iPhone—any phone running apps like TikTok, YouTube, and Facebook can overheat. And guess what? When you stop using those apps, the phone cools down.
If you don’t like hearing that, then don’t complain when your phone overheats while streaming videos.

My phone only gets hot if the room is really warm or when I’m outside and it’s sunny. Otherwise, no issues.
I posted this in another thread, but here’s what worked for me: I was having the same overheating issue on day one with my iPhone 15 Pro. I did some research and found a solution—deleting the Apple Weather widget fixed it for me instantly. I also turned off location settings for apps that don’t need them. Hope this helps someone else too!
The cooling system on the 15 Pro models isn’t great. I get the same issue sometimes. I’m thinking about upgrading to the iPhone 16 Pro Max, but it doesn’t seem worth it for a minor update. I’ll probably hold out until the 17 Pro Max.

I’m thinking of switching to Android, but I might just get the iPhone 16 Pro Max too. I just want a phone that doesn’t get super hot when I watch a 10-minute YouTube video.

Sounds like a faulty phone. If it’s still under warranty, you should replace it. Mine works all day with no issues.

I’d take it in to get checked. I can watch hours of YouTube without mine heating up. I’ve even watched full movies with the brightness turned all the way up, and it’s fine.
15 Pro Max, running iOS 18.1 Dev.
I believe what you’re saying, but as a fellow 15 Pro Max user, I haven’t had this happen. Mine only gets warm when I use a fast charger for about 30 minutes. There have been a couple of times when it’s gotten hot, but it’s rare. Sorry you’re dealing with that—I’d be frustrated too.

Do you use your phone a lot throughout the day?

Pretty much all day. I watch a lot of YouTube, browse forums, and play games.

Thanks. I’ll definitely go to the Apple Store after my vacation. I was even thinking about switching to Android because this overheating problem is driving me crazy, especially after spending so much on this phone.
