This is my first time pre-ordering a phone, and I want to have a case ready as soon as it arrives. I know that companies get the dimensions in advance, so cases are available right away. But how can I tell which cases are good if no one has tried them yet? Are there any brands that people trust to make cases for the new model? I really want to make sure I have a case right away after I get the phone.
I’m looking for a thin, transparent back case for the 16 Pro Max. If the bumper is black, that’s fine, but I want the back to be clear and overall thin. Any suggestions?

For the iPhone 16 Pro, I wouldn’t trust any case other than Apple’s own. Their cases work with the capture button seamlessly without needing a cutout.

I’m very curious about the capture button and would like to use it directly, even if it means a small cutout. I think even Apple’s case will feel different regarding haptics.

I used to stick to Apple’s cases for reassurance about quality, but they don’t last long at all. I usually upgrade every two years, so a $20 case is worth it to me if it wears out anyway.

It’s not just about case quality. The capture button is both a physical button and has touch controls. The Apple case covers it while letting it still work, but other options will need cutouts until they replicate Apple’s design.

Phone Rebel cases don’t have cutouts.
At this moment, they do have cutouts for the 16. They didn’t before because iPhones never had a touch-sensitive button on the side. Until companies adjust their designs, cutouts will be the standard.

I’ve been using the Smartish Gripmunk cases for my last few iPhones. I always pre-order, so I have the case and a screen protector ready when it arrives. The Smartish case has always worked out well, except for one year when the buttons were too stiff, but they replaced them for free for that batch.

+1 for Smartish Gripmunk. They never disappoint.
+1 for Smartish; I’ve used them for a few years and love their lightweight, simple design that protects well without being expensive.

I’d recommend Spigen or ESR. You won’t be let down.

According to the Apple site: OtterBox Lumen Series Case with MagSafe for iPhone 16 Pro Max is also a nice case.

I’ve been pleased with my Pitaka case for my 15 Pro this past year. They use aramid, which is very lightweight. I enjoy the open bottom design; it makes swiping up feel nicer. They are pretty minimalist, so they won’t give full protection like an OtterBox, but my phone still has no damage after drops. I’ve used Spigen in the past too, and they are solid. The Liquid Air line is good.

The Nomad modern leather case is nice. It costs about $60 delivered for the non-Horween leather version. If you’re looking for a quality case at a fair price, the Spigen cases available on Amazon are good.

Nomad’s traditional leather is sold out right now.

Up to now, the Apple case is the only one that has a sapphire crystal over the camera control, with a conductive layer to recognize touch inputs.
