My Charging Port Just Stopped Working

One of my MBA M1’s thunderbolt ports (the one closer to the screen) suddenly quit working today—it’s not charging or transferring data anymore. Just yesterday, it was perfectly fine. There’s no damage because I take great care of my devices. It’s been 2 and a half years, but really, there’s hardly any sign of wear and tear since I maintain it well… The other port is working fine, though. I ran safe mode, but that didn’t help. I ran diagnostics, and it showed PPP020, PPP001. Seems like there’s an issue with the power port, so something is definitely wrong here. I only use this port for charging and we’ve only ever used the original magsafe charger. I’m really hoping to fix this myself because getting to an Apple service center is hard since I live in a rural area. Sigh. Can anyone help?

UPDATE—
I just updated my MacOS to Sonoma 14.1.1 and THE PORT IS WORKING FINE AGAIN. So it was indeed an OS bug. Thank goodness I didn’t go for service before this recent update, or Apple Service would have charged me for a fix that a simple update resolved. :no_mouth:

I’ve been taking care of my mac too and suddenly I’m seeing the same problem happening.

I think it’s a problem with the MBA M1… I’ve read about other users having the same issue, but it seems like many weren’t resolved unless sent to a service center for checking.

MacBook m1 2020

My Mac is crashing unexpectedly while in sleep mode and shutting down. I had to download everything one by one today because of a port error during the first diagnostic and the second diagnostic showed no issues when connected to power.

What a mess this new update has caused.

Yeah, this is my first time experiencing issues with a new macOS. I wish I could go back to Ventura.

M2 air with Sonoma, same problem, errors with the power port in diagnostics, one USB-C port works fine but the other connects and disconnects when charging via USB-C…

Really disappointed with the reliability of Macs lately…

Has your Mac problem been solved?

Help! Has anyone found a solution to this? I upgraded to Sonoma 14.5 a few days ago and my MagSafe port has stopped working. The light on the charger blinks but it charges other Macs. Diagnostics show PPP020, which is a charging port issue. When I shut it down completely and charge it overnight, it only goes up to about 20 percent. When I turn it back on, it shows no charging at all. The USB-C ports are also not working now. Toggling ‘ask new device’ in settings helps temporarily but doesn’t work when the MacBook is starting up. I wanted to go back to Ventura, but it seems I’m locked out from downgrading the OS.
PS no damage on my part. This was just a passive device for watching videos every few days.
Sonoma 14.5 messed up my MBP charging port.

In my case, upgrading to the latest update fixed the issue. I hope yours gets resolved soon too.

Same issue here. MBP 2021 16-inch, Sonoma 14.5.

Not charging on the MagSafe port, but it charges via USB-C.

Same here with my MB Pro m3, 14-inch. I don’t know about previous versions, but I’m currently upgrading to Sonoma 14.5 to see if that fixes it. I was using it fine all day and then noticed the MagSafe blinking orange after logging off. USB-C is fine, but MagSafe isn’t.

I’m experiencing the same issue with my MBA M1. Ever since the Sonoma update, the upper Thunderbolt port has been acting up. It recognizes connections but won’t charge.
When I restart the system while the charger is plugged in, it sometimes recognizes the port, but it stops working again afterward. It’s really frustrating, and sometimes diagnostics say there’s an issue with the port, making me think this could be a software problem.

Guys, any updates? What finally fixed your issue?

None yet. I tried the beta version Sequoia, but the same problem persisted. I downgraded back to Sonoma, but that didn’t work either. The new Sonoma update 14.6 didn’t help either. Now I’m just waiting for another update hoping it will fix this. :pensive: Currently, I’m not using the Mac. I don’t want to send it to Apple for fix as they’ll probably charge for replacing the charging/USB ports.

Something similar happened to me, but I have no idea why.

Most people ended up taking it to the Apple service center because nothing else worked. For some users, reinstalling macOS fixed things, so I think I’ll try that too…

It turned out to be a software bug. The next MacOS update came, and once I updated, the port worked fine again.

I’ve had the same issue for many updates. My MacBook shuts down when I sleep it and errors show up. Should I just take this to the service center?
