One of my MBA M1’s thunderbolt ports (the one closer to the screen) suddenly quit working today—it’s not charging or transferring data anymore. Just yesterday, it was perfectly fine. There’s no damage because I take great care of my devices. It’s been 2 and a half years, but really, there’s hardly any sign of wear and tear since I maintain it well… The other port is working fine, though. I ran safe mode, but that didn’t help. I ran diagnostics, and it showed PPP020, PPP001. Seems like there’s an issue with the power port, so something is definitely wrong here. I only use this port for charging and we’ve only ever used the original magsafe charger. I’m really hoping to fix this myself because getting to an Apple service center is hard since I live in a rural area. Sigh. Can anyone help?
UPDATE—
I just updated my MacOS to Sonoma 14.1.1 and THE PORT IS WORKING FINE AGAIN. So it was indeed an OS bug. Thank goodness I didn’t go for service before this recent update, or Apple Service would have charged me for a fix that a simple update resolved.
What exactly do the techs do?
Most people ended up taking it to the Apple service center because nothing else worked. For some users, reinstalling macOS fixed things, so I think I’ll try that too…
Any updates?
It turned out to be a software bug. The next MacOS update came, and once I updated, the port worked fine again.
I’ve had the same issue for many updates. My MacBook shuts down when I sleep it and errors show up. Should I just take this to the service center?
Since it hasn’t improved after several updates, I would recommend bringing it to the service center. A bug isn’t likely since updates didn’t resolve it.

I had to reset things and then I managed to diagnose and find this out.

I have a 2023 pro and it’s showing the same error. It’s under 3 months old and has always been indoors. I wonder if it has to do with a recent update.

I really wish I hadn’t updated to Sonoma. All this started after the update. Everything was working fine before.

Updating… to be fair, my initial assumption was unfair. For me, the charger was just faulty. I got a new one under warranty.

Did you manage to fix your problem?
Mine is happening on my MBP 14" 2021 and it randomly shuts down since the Sonoma update. The diagnostic shows PPP020 as the issue. I’m planning a trip to the Apple Store, but I’m anxious since I’m not under warranty.

Hey! After a month of trying, I plugged the faulty port in again and it surprisingly worked. I did nothing differently. I still use the same MagSafe charger. Maybe it was just a momentary glitch with the laptop. I just hope it doesn’t happen again.
Yours seems more serious since random shut downs can be very troublesome. If going to an Apple Service Center wouldn’t be too hard for you, I recommend it. It might not be too costly if it’s software-related. Hardware issues can get expensive.

I’m thinking it might be hardware, which really stinks since I got this laptop in late 2021 and now it’s having these random issues.
Thanks for replying. I wasn’t sure if it was Sonoma or if the port just stopped working after 2 years.

We have the same issue, same port. It just suddenly quit working, no data or charging. But the other port works well. Our best option is to visit the nearest Apple Store to get it checked. Since I’m still under warranty, I think it’s the best choice.

What a hassle, right? I’m even more frustrated since mine isn’t under warranty anymore—it’s almost 3 years old, and I live far from any Apple Service Center. :((

I’m having similar issues with PPP020. I take great care of my M2, so I’m not sure what happened. I went to the service center, but they said everything was fine. Still, my laptop charges very slowly, even with a 67W adapter. Can someone help me resolve this issue?
