Apple Working on a Bigger iMac with Over 30 Inch Display

The ProArt line is fantastic for Apple devices. They even have a 27 inch 4K OLED monitor. It would be amazing if they also offered a 120hz version.

I remember seeing this review covering the ASUS ProArt PA279CRV monitor paired with a Mac Mini last year.

@Clancy
Thanks for sharing this info :slight_smile:

I just want a standalone 30 to 32 inch 6K display that’s not 5,000 dollars.

No HDR, but it’s a 32 inch monitor with 6K resolution just like the Pro Display XDR and it has nice input options (Mini DP 2.1, HDMI, and Thunderbolt). It even has a built-in USB hub usable over Thunderbolt or with devices connected to HDMI or DP via an upstream USB-C.

I just wish it didn’t have a built-in webcam or speakers, those make the bezels thicker, but it’s a good monitor otherwise.

@Sam
Yeah, if it didn’t have that awful forehead, I might already have one.

Oh that was definitely r/yesyesyesyesno material.

I’ve gotten used to it since it’s less than half the cost of a Pro Display XDR and offers better connectivity.

How bad could it be- oh dear god.

@Sam
Only 450 nits brightness though… that’s even less than the 1,500 dollar Studio Display (600 nits) and way lower than the Pro Display XDR (1,600 nits). And apparently its color accuracy isn’t that great (if that matters to you).

@Uma
I mostly use it for software development where 6K clarity makes a big difference compared to 4K at 32 inch. So, color accuracy is not a huge factor for me. I keep it at 80% brightness, which is more than sufficient for my needs.

It won’t fit everyone’s needs, but for the price, I see it as a great option, especially with few alternatives available (my workstation isn’t a Mac, so I can’t use XDR).

@Sam
How do you like it for coding?

It’s awesome! 6K is a much better resolution for scaling at 32 inches compared to 4K, and the text is much sharper.

@Sam
I’d pay for it if it had around 10,000 dimming zones. I currently have an LG 5K from 2017, so I’m already used to the larger bezels.

@Sam
Thanks for the suggestion.

I’m looking into the LG UltraGear 32GS95UX-B. It’s a 4K 32 inch 240hz option, which can also do 480hz at 1080p. Great for both gaming and work.

It costs around 1,300 dollars. The stand isn’t great, but I can always mount it elsewhere.

Why specifically 6K though? Is it that much better?

@Corey
When it comes to productive work, 4K at a 32 inch size can feel a bit low resolution, especially because of how Macs manage display scaling and text rendering.

Ideally, you’d want a monitor with a dpi of around 210-220 to match Apple’s laptop and desktop displays.

At home, I have some 4K 27 inch monitors, but they don’t quite match the sharpness of Apple’s 5K 27 inch display. For productivity, I wouldn’t want to go lower than that dpi.

@Kai
That’s a good point. I’m a designer and I also have a 4K 27. It works fine, but maybe I should consider a 6K at 32 inches then. Is it really that noticeable? I mainly use it for Figma and graphics aren’t too critical, but I do some graphic design work as well.

They could have just made the same iMac as the current one, using an identical base M-series chip, same components, just with a larger display. That would have sold really well. But they didn’t.

You should consider the Dell UltraSharp 32 inch 6K. It’s around 2,400 dollars.

If it didn’t have such an unappealing forehead, I might already own one. An updated Apple 32 inch display could ideally feature 120hz. I know it would be pricier than the Dell, but there is room for pricing between 2,400 and 5,000 dollars.

@Kai
Totally agree about the forehead :weary:, but I’m sure the new Apple display will have a higher price.
