I message my girlfriend throughout the day, but her number never appears in my suggestions here. Even though I text her more than others who show up, I can’t figure out why this happens. Has anyone else experienced something like this?
You can long press on any of the people showing up and choose ‘suggest less’. That will remove them and free up space for others. I’ve noticed that the suggestions depend on what I’m sharing. Sometimes I share pictures, sometimes songs, or websites, and it seems to know which people are more likely to get those types of messages.

Tried that, but it forgets that I asked it to suggest less. What works for me is disabling the suggestion row entirely.

I’m not sure, but I think it’s based on the people you’ve texted recently. I have this issue too, where some people don’t show up.

I text her all day, but she never shows up.

She’s never appeared there. But people I messaged ages ago are showing up.

Interesting. I saw a comment saying if you press and hold the icon, you can suggest less. That could help!

Thank you! I kept pressing it on the people it suggested, and after deleting 3 or 4 times, she appeared .

Same for me too 
I only see WhatsApp contacts, never iMessage, even though I use both daily.
This happened to me too. I had to keep scrolling until one day it finally understood who was my most texted person.
How often do you send her photos? I’m pretty sure it looks for that signal. If you only text, but never send photos (like to a boss or teacher), they might show up where you don’t want them.
