I want to compare the cameras of the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max to see which one is better. I like the size of the 15 Pro Max, but I recently saw a video claiming that the Pro has a superior optical zoom compared to the 5x zoom of the Pro Max.
Even though I received the 15 Pro, I may exchange it for the Pro Max if it indeed has a better camera. Any help or insights on this topic would be greatly appreciated. I’ve been watching videos to gather more information, and one video even suggests that the 3x zoom of the Pro is superior to the Pro Max.
Here’s the video I watched: Link

The Pro Max has a 5x optical zoom, while the regular Pro has a 3x zoom. Their performance is identical up to 2.9x. At 3x, the regular Pro uses its telephoto camera, making it better from 3x to 4.9x. At 5x and beyond, the Pro Max uses its 5x 120mm lens, making it superior.

I am getting a little confused as I consider your response. You mentioned from 2.9 to 4.9x, so I get why the 15 Pro is better at 3x. The pro only has an optical zoom of 3x, therefore the pro max, which has a digital zoom of 3.1 to 4.9, would not perform better?

With its “tetraprism” architecture, the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s 5x optical zoom camera refracts light many times to provide additional zoom within the phone’s small frame. The new telephoto camera on the Pro Max is a major upgrade over the 3x telephoto camera on its predecessor, offering digital zoom up to 25x magnification.
If you use the 5x lens, you’re locked into at least 5x zoom. You can’t zoom out to 4.9x with the 5x lens. Both phones use digital zoom from 3.1x to 4.9x, but the Pro uses the 3x telephoto lens while the Pro Max uses the main 24mm camera.
In short:
- The Pro Max uses the main lens for 1x to 4.9x.
- The Pro uses the main lens for 1x to 2.9x and the telephoto lens from 3x to 4.9x.
- At 5x and beyond, the Pro Max performs better.
