It’s Apple’s wireless charger with a magnet around the charging pad to match the one inside the phone so it attaches magnetically.
What makes it different from any other wireless charger? I’ve used Android wireless chargers easily without magnets. Is there an advantage to MagSafe over those? Or is this just Apple selling fancy stuff?
It’s magnetic and auto-aligns. You can get MagSafe car mounts that hold your phone without using clamps or special cases.

The OtterBox MagSafe car mount with suction cup or adhesive for the dash or windshield is awesome! The reviews are fully justified if you’re interested. It’s totally worth around $40-50. My phone holds in place in my truck no matter what, bumps or sudden stops. Plus, you can adjust it however you want. There’s also a charging version with the same design, just make sure you check the details so you know which one you’re getting. I prefer the mount that doesn’t use cords to keep the vehicle neat. My battery lasts a whole day normally, so I don’t even need to charge while driving.

MagSafe charges at 15 watts, while other chargers are usually limited to 7.5 watts. But it’s mainly the magnet.
You can also use it for wallets, pop sockets, and other things if you’re interested.

The magnets in an iPhone and the MagSafe chargers are placed in a way that ensures the charging coils align perfectly. This makes charging more efficient and produces less heat, which is good for the battery.

I see a lot of cases and accessories for MagSafe but I’m not sure what it actually does. I’ve been using Android for a long time and I’m upgrading to the iPhone 15 soon, so I’m just trying to get the hang of Apple stuff.
It’s mainly a wireless charging system for iPhone 11 and newer. It’s a magnetic disc built into the phone, and it’s awesome. You just set your phone on a magnetic charging disc from Apple, Anker, or another brand. I recommend Apple for MagSafe accessories, but Anker and Belkin are solid too. Don’t skimp on MagSafe products, or the heat might harm your battery in the long run. There are also various magnetic accessories that work with this system, like car mounts, chargers, cases, and wallets. The Apple AirPods Pro 2 and newer Apple Watches use MagSafe too, so you have a MagSafe system across many devices. It communicates well with your device. When you put a MagSafe case on your phone, it knows it’s there, and there’s even more beyond that, but that’s the gist. There’s some tech for digital business cards that I don’t fully understand. Plus, the Apple MagSafe wallet snaps onto the case and has a feature to track it, just like the AirPods Pro 2. It’s a great system; I exclusively use it. I only charge my iPhone 13 and AirPods Pro 2 with Apple MagSafe chargers, and I got a nice weighted MagSafe charging stand from Nomad Goods for my bedside table, preparing for iOS 17 and standby mode. It keeps my charging clean and simple without plugging in. I just set my phone down at night, and it smart charges, pausing until the last few hours before I wake up to finish charging. It learns your charging habits and sleep schedule if you charge at night. Highly recommend checking out MagSafe systems.

Just so you know, wireless charging was around two years before the iPhone 11, and MagSafe came the next year.

Got it. I knew standard QI charging was out before the 11. I just thought MagSafe started with the 11, but I see now it was the 12. It really did change things for wireless charging and accessories. The magnetic system and the fast 15-watt charging make a huge difference in the experience.

If you’re asking about the phone MagSafe and not the MacBook version, it’s simply a magnetic way to align and attach the Qi wireless charger to the phone. Since you mentioned using Android before, it’s similar to the Nexus 4 from 2013.
