What is MagSafe all about

I see a lot of cases and accessories for MagSafe but I’m not sure what it actually does. I’ve been using Android for a long time and I’m upgrading to the iPhone 15 soon, so I’m just trying to get the hang of Apple stuff.

MagSafe is a feature found in MacBooks (except 2015-2017 MacBook and 2016-2020 MacBook Pro models). It’s a magnetic system that prevents damage if someone trips on the charger.

For iPhones (12 and newer), there are magnets under the wireless charger that help it align with accessories like cases, stands, battery packs, and more.

You can even add MagSafe to older iPhones by swapping the housing or getting a magnet set online.

Also, MagSafe allows for 15-watt wireless charging, while the standard Qi charging only goes up to 7.5 watts.

No amount of convincing will make me say ‘chi’ instead of ‘queue eye’

That’s totally okay.

That’s fine. Those of us into qi gong and martial arts will keep saying Chi, since it’s a universal life force, and it doesn’t mind what you call it.

This comment is spot on. Clear, to the point, and really helpful without sounding condescending.

MagSafe isn’t just one thing, it’s a name for anything that uses Apple’s magnetic system.

On compatible iPhones, there are magnets strategically placed in the back. MagSafe accessories attach to this.

For charging, MagSafe improves on Qi by making sure the charging coils are perfectly aligned. Qi charging can be inefficient, and if the coils aren’t aligned it can make things worse. MagSafe helps with that.

It also includes wallets that securely stick on, stands for both charging or non-charging, and various mounts for home, bike, or car.

Also, in the unofficial market, you can find items like pop sockets and laptop attachments that let you use your iPhone as a webcam.

MagSafe was the name of Apple’s laptop charger years ago. It used to attach with a magnet, so if you tripped, the charger would disconnect without dragging the laptop down. They later switched to USB-C but brought back the idea for some models.

Later on, they included a magnetic ring in the phones with a wireless charging disc. They recycled the MagSafe name even though there was no breakaway feature like before. Now, Apple can sell various magnetic accessories for the back of the phone.

I have a MagSafe phone but I use regular wireless chargers because I prefer picking up my phone with one hand. I don’t want it to be a hassle to take it off the charger. The MagSafe battery packs are nice to avoid carrying a separate battery with a USB.

Again, why should this matter to me?

If everyone did that, no one would use the forum. You could scroll past without commenting as well, but here we are.

This forum and all its content are indexed like any other site, so it will show up in search results. Asking questions clearly in this forum and getting answers helps everyone. Documentation isn’t always straightforward, making things tricky to understand.

Just a short version: the more we ask questions here and the fewer people saying just Google it, the better it is for everyone.

A comment that’s over 200 days late from someone who loves digital clutter, well done. Moving on…(bow)

Clearly not clutter since it helped.

You don’t really understand how the internet works, do you?

Hey, I wanted to mention that I was googling what MagSafe was because I didn’t get it, and I found this thread which was way more helpful than anything else. But sure, digital waste.
