Make sure to check the Apple Store app for availability at your local stores if you missed the first round of preorders and received a ridiculous ETA from Apple or a carrier. Most models are available for pickup the same day or the day after.

I did exactly the same. I missed out on the pre-order since I couldn’t decide on a model. This morning I reserved a 15 Pro Max in Natural Titanium for pick-up this afternoon.
