PSA: Create a Shortcut to Hear the Time When Snoozing the Alarm?

I’ve posted about using the crown button to snooze the alarm. But it can get you into a habit of snoozing without realizing the time. This shortcut might help you stay aware of the time :))

@Noah
I’m actually testing it right now, and the volume setting doesn’t seem to affect the speaking action.

Yeah, unfortunately, Apple Shortcuts still doesn’t let us control the device’s spoken volume. You can only adjust the media volume (like for music or podcasts) or the ringtone volume.

You can easily check that there’s a separate speech volume. Ask Siri a question and see how loud the answer is. Then, press and hold the Digital Crown on your Watch and tell Siri to ‘speak softer.’ You’ll hear, ‘ok, I’ll speak softer’ or ‘I’ll dial it down.’ After that, ask another question, and you’ll notice the response is quieter (especially if you ask it to speak softer a few times). These changes don’t affect media playback volume.

This also applies to your iPhone, iPad, or HomePod. I just wish Apple would give us access to control the speech volume in Shortcuts.

That’s strange. It seemed different to me. Are you snoozing from your phone or your watch?

@Noah
I tried both. I checked online too, and it seems like a common issue that the volume setting has no effect on the speak text action.

Well, being deaf in my right ear is back again. I could totally hear a difference!

@Noah
If you try setting the volume low, I think you’ll still hear it at the same unchanged volume. Anyway, you can manually adjust it while it’s playing. That way, it sets the volume for all Siri spoken text and voice.

Also, happy cake day!

Thanks! :blush:

@Noah
For me, it absolutely changes the volume. My phone has been acting weird lately; the ping sound from my watch (and frustratingly from Find My) is controlled by the media volume. Try lowering your media volume to 0% and ping your phone from your watch. Does it make any sound?

@Gray
Yeah, it still pings even at 0 volume. I can only change the speaking volume while it’s talking.

@Noah
Can you share the link to the shortcut?

I can share it if you want, but it’s just… speak text now.

Regarding the volume for the speak text action, I found that setting the volume doesn’t really impact it. As a workaround, I’ve been adjusting the volume manually while Siri speaks. You can do this while testing the shortcut. It’s strange there doesn’t seem to be another way to set this up.

@Denali
Sweet!
