My MacBook Air 2020 has a cracked bezel and I need some advice

As shown in the picture, the bezel around my screen is broken. The screen still works fine, but I’m uncertain how much longer that will last. As a student, all my work is on this laptop, so it’s crucial I don’t lose anything. Can anyone tell me if I should get it fixed or if it’s fine as it is? Any suggestions on what to do would really help.

I would probably just leave it if I didn’t have Apple care

I don’t have Apple care either, so I will likely just do what you suggested

But you might worry it could crack more. Maybe get those sticker things like they use on car windshields to stop it from spreading.

That could actually put more pressure on the screen and make it more likely to crack.

I’d leave it but be really cautious around that area. When you clean your screen, don’t touch it, even if you’re just drying it. Consider that area off-limits. If you move a piece just right or let some water in, it could go from a minor issue to a major one quickly.

You can get a $2 a month Google Drive subscription for 100GB to backup all your data. A better option might be to get a Samsung external USB-C SSD and copy your files there. The Samsung drive should last you for at least a decade. I don’t see the point in fixing the screen at an official shop if you don’t have Apple care. Wait to repair it until the screen stops working, which probably won’t happen anytime soon.

Here are some links: 256GB for $26 and 1TB for $99. The $99 one is faster and more durable, so it will last longer but costs more and has a lot more space.

The SSD seems a bit pricey for me, but the Google Drive subscription is doable. What do you think about getting more iCloud storage?

Yeah, iCloud could also be a good choice, especially since it’s integrated into the Mac system.

You could replace the bezel yourself. Check out this video for help: Video Link

How did this happen?

I have the same crack but mine is on the top left. I haven’t done anything about it and it’s working just fine so far.

Is the glass behind the bezel cracked too? Did you put tape on it?

It’s pretty easy to replace the bezel. It costs only a few dollars, and you can find one on eBay without any trouble.

Sounds good but the glass behind the bezel looks damaged too. Will that be a problem?

Are those sold separately? I didn’t know that and can it be done yourself?

I got the same crack on mine. I closed it with my headphone jack still in place… but it’s working fine.

That’s exactly what happened to my Mac. I hope mine stays okay too.

I would use screen repair glue to seal it and prevent moisture from getting in, plus backup your data on an SSD.
