They try to sell us a discontinued product while embarrassing us by arguing that any technology older than a few years is vintage. Decide what you want!
The main reason is money. They made a good router, but not enough people bought it to make it worth continuing production. Most people use the free routers provided by their internet service provider. It’s tough to compete with something that costs nothing.
Apple’s AirPort Extreme routers were really good. I used to have the flat one before they changed to the tower design.
In 2017, I decided it was time for a new router. I first tried Eero, then AmpliFi, and finally Gryphon, but each one had its own problems. Eventually, I bought an ASUS XT12, and it has been working great.
I hate to admit it, but the time has come and gone. ISP routers are now more than enough for most people. While there is a niche market for brands like Ubiquiti and Eero/Nest, it’s probably not big enough for Apple to spend time and money on.
I am still using 5 AirPort Extremes with Ethernet connections for my whole network. There’s no need to upgrade since they work just fine.
