Macbook Air M3 best specs for long lasting use

16GB should be enough I often have 30 to 50 tabs open without issue I think even 8GB would be fine Just try it out in a store

I am also a medical student using 16GB RAM and 512GB storage and my MacBook Air M2 works perfectly with everything I throw at it I believe you will get the best value with an M3 in that setup

Honestly I like the Starlight or midnight color but since the midnight shows fingerprints easily I chose starlight It looks like my classmates standard silver MacBook Airs but with a nice champagne tint I really like the midnight color but the fingerprints are a hassle

Based on your usage 8GB is actually still sufficient for your tasks The issue with your Intel machine is not a lack of RAM but your older processor struggling with new software M3 will significantly outperform your Intel machine even with just 8GB RAM

16GB would keep you more future-ready too and now they have a 16GB Air available at the Apple Store (previously it was custom order only) That model also comes with a 512GB SSD I’m sure it could serve you just fine for 9 years but why stretch that long? Macs retain value well If you take care of it you can likely recoup 40 to 50 percent of the purchase price after four years Use that money to buy a new fully supported model and it’s not that different from investing in a high spec machine that you may not fully utilize

Most people won’t really notice a difference between 16GB and 24GB Going from 8GB to 16GB would be clear if you plan to do more creative tasks Just keep in mind that the memory in these computers shares resources among the CPU, GPU, ML cores, and more In many real-world situations going from 8GB to 16GB can reduce bottlenecks and be a bigger upgrade than it seems but only if you push the machine a bit harder than your mentioned tasks

Currently I’m reviewing the new M3 Midnight finish and it seems better than the M2 model with an enhanced fingerprint resistant coat It still requires regular cleaning though Darker colors always show marks more clearly If you can check one out at a store do it everyone tends to touch those anyway

Hello I am a medical student currently using a 2015 Intel MBP with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage
My computer has been reliable so far except for the battery which I haven’t replaced and after 9 years of daily use now it usually lasts about 2 hours

I think its time for an upgrade and I am considering buying an M3 MBA I use it for regular tasks sometimes having 15 or more chrome tabs open along with a few spreadsheets on excel some pdfs playing music on Spotify and so on If possible I would like to use sidecar with my iPad but I can’t because I’m still on Catalina Nothing too extreme

I want my new MBA to last at least 9 years Is 16GB of RAM enough or should I consider going for 24GB of RAM? When I bought my MBP 9 years ago 8GB was clearly sufficient for my needs and now my MBP tends to freeze or crash if I’m not careful with what I have open

Also what color should I choose Do you think the new midnight anodized finish is nice

Thanks

Don’t overspend on a MacBook expecting it to last 10 years Apple provides support for 7 to 8 years so don’t aim for longer than that If it lasts more than 8 years it has served you well Once Apple marks a MacBook as obsolete and stops security updates its life is over There are ways to tweak things for updates but we can’t be sure if those will work in 8 years

Buy what you need now Your usage doesn’t seem extensive so any M processor you choose will work well As you mentioned you use multiple tabs and Excel I would recommend 16GB RAM 8GB might be sufficient if you can’t afford the upgrade but 16GB would provide more flexibility and makes the upgrade worthwhile 24GB is simply too much for your needs

Macs only become obsolete 7 years after they’re last on sale by Apple So if the M3 MBAs are sold until 2026 then it will become vintage in 2031 and obsolete in 2033

Honestly by that reasoning the M1 will go obsolete in 2031 since they just discontinued the M1 Air

Exactly 2024 plus 7 equals 2031
2026 plus 7 equals 2033

This isn’t just a theory it’s Apple’s policy

That’s not accurate

I bought my M3 specifically to replace a fully loaded 2013 MBPro with i7 16GB 512 SSD and a discrete GPU

This has become my primary video editing laptop for my YouTube channel with weekly video releases

This old laptop works fine even after 11 years of use lost Apple support a while ago but still functions well

I just recently changed its battery from Amazon and it’s impressively working even my wife plans to keep it because it’s good enough for her simple tasks like browsing and using Excel

The idea that laptops last only 7 to 8 years because of ending support is incorrect And you still get necessary security updates it just means new versions of the OS won’t be available It’s still safe for online banking and anything else

You don’t receive crucial security updates once Apple marks a device as obsolete Their support model is very straightforward OS upgrades last around 7 years, followed by about 2 years of patches before the device is deemed obsolete

Obsolete is an Apple term not mine I mean it may be considered “unsupported” Could it run longer if maintained? Yes, but hardware performance doesn’t decline as fast as it did a decade ago

My aim is to advise against overspending on a Macbook based on the idea it will last 10 years because realistically it’s unlikely Get what you now need and plan for a life of about 6 to 8 years for a well maintained machine

It’s a clear and structured policy I see many people guessing about how long their devices will receive support and updates All the information is available The countdown on support doesn’t begin until they stop selling the device For example, the M1 MBA just stopped being on sale and has 5 years to become vintage then another two to go obsolete

To clarify it’s seven years after the device is no longer sold So the M1 MacBook Air, which I bought in 2020, will become obsolete around 2031

They actually do That’s just Apple’s way of defining product support

End of Life means 6 to 7 years until a MacBook no longer receives new OS features
Obsolete means approximately 8 to 9 years when a MacBook no longer gets security updates or OS support

Once a device isn’t receiving security fixes it shouldn’t be used online anymore (time to upgrade) You could use tools like opencore to apply newer versions on older Macs but reliability isn’t guaranteed and may not function well in 8 years

Once a device isn’t receiving security fixes it shouldn’t be used online anymore (time to upgrade) You could use tools like opencore to apply newer versions on older Macs but reliability isn’t guaranteed and may not function well in 8 years

I’m guessing you own a 2015 MBP? This model had a strong support span It was deemed end of life with Monterey in 2022 after 7 years and will be obsolete by late 2024 after 9 years However, the 2017 MacBook pro ended its life last year getting only 6 years of upgrades and will stop receiving updates by next year

Ultimately it’s up to you My aim is to inform the person not to justify the cost of a MacBook by expecting it to last 10 years since that likelihood is low

They actually do That’s just Apple’s way of defining product support

Apple considers a device obsolete when it stops receiving patches fixes or security updates

Once that happens it’s advisable not to use it for online activities

The whole idea of being obsolete is a joke I started my YouTube channel last year and still manage to release videos each month using my 2013 MacBook Pro 15 I’m capable of doing almost everything

I’m video editing on FCPX with all the latest plugins while using outdated Nvidia drivers since they’re not getting updates for the GT750M discrete graphics chip But yes, it works perfectly fine

The last OS I received is Big Sur and I won’t get any more but I still get updates for security Apple doesn’t disclose the timeline for when they stop releasing updates for older devices

Many users still run older versions of the macOS without issues

If planned obsolescence is real, it’s only made worse by users like you preemptively planning the products’ obsolescence when there’s still functionality

I’m not sure why you seem so upset I agree with you planned obsolescence is not acceptable

I’m simply stating that Apple has a clear period for supporting devices Their support times are good for older devices where hardware typically didn’t last as long New hardware can last for 10 years easily Could they extend support? They could Will opencore work in 10 years? That’s uncertain

The key point is not to overspend based on the assumption it will last 10 years that’s unrealistic and may impact people’s finances Planning for a lifespan of about 6 to 7 years is more realistic If your laptop exceeds that, excellent it’s done well and owes you nothing

Keep in mind those timeframes for vintage and obsolete status relate to when the device stopped being sold It appears that under the Apple Silicon era, you could reasonably expect about 10 years of support.
