I have an M1 iMac in purple. Still obsessed with the display. I’m never selling it.
I freaking love the look of the iMac. If I could put it in a mode where I can use it as a display for another Mac I would buy one in a heartbeat. But having the computer built in just is too limiting for me.

Depends how rich you are- for the price of the ASD you can buy an actual iMac.
My first Mac was an iMac and I adored it. I’ve always had a soft spot for them.
The difference is, the Studio Display will outlive several Macs. With an iMac once the computer part gets too slow or breaks the whole package has to be replaced.

An iMac is typically $1200 whereas a Studio Display is $1500. You still need to bring your own laptop or desktop which is another $500 or more. At that point, you could buy another version of iMac when the time comes.

I got my SD refurbished from apple for ~1300. Also I use it with both windows and apple products as an external display, something you can’t do with an iMac.

You can run both MacOS and Windows on an iMac….
I’m aware, what I meant was you can’t use it as an external monitor. This is important for things like work issued computers.

iMac never wins with a 24” monitor. It’s too small for modern desk setups.
It feels fine on its own. I say that, sitting in front of a 57" monitor as I type this lol. I have spent some time using a 24" m1 imac, and didn’t feel oppressed using it at all.
I mean, lots of people are totally fine using a 13-15" laptop as their only computer screen. Compared to that, 24" is pretty sweet.
I see these iMacs as just enough computer. Nothing more. In a way it’s liberating how little desk space they take and how clean and simple it is. Plus THEY COME IN CUTE COLORS! I love how they even come with matching power cords and keyboards and mice and/or trackpads.
And I say that as someone who lusted after the 27" and 32" apple displays for a while lol. Damn near bought the 32" XDR a year ago on a whim. Then backed off.

I respect your opinion but find even an M2 Mac mini pro ($1100ish) or even just an m2 Mac mini ($700ish?) + a 27” or 32” IPS monitor, or 34” ultrawide, to be vastly superior in every way

It’s ok, I’m not offended if you don’t respect my opinion either xD
The 27" or 32" IPS monitor will be 4k and have worse image quality than the iMac’s 24" 4.5K monitor. Unless you’re interested in using it for watching 4k videos specifically! (which maybe you are!)
There’s also the practical aspects - a separate monitor can be reused for many years. I still see people post in /r/macsetups with 20 year old aluminum cinema displays. In /r/battlestations you occasionally see 30+ year old CRT monitors lol.
Still, I think there are use cases where an iMac is nice. And the colors are nice. Honestly I wish they offered all of their products with color options!

Disagree wholeheartedly. I do tons of creative work on my iMac 24” (music blog website, and music production) and I’ve never felt cramped with the screen size.

Ok
It’s true. I get a lot of work done on my 1080p 24’ monitor
