iMac Announcement - October 28

I really wish Apple had continued making the 27" iMacs. If they had, I’d be seriously considering one. My father feels the same way; for years, he’s been frustrated that his aging 27" iMac can’t be replaced without giving up on screen size. Now, he’s debating a Mac Mini paired with an external monitor, but it’s just not the same elegant, all-in-one solution that the iMac offers.

@Lin
Same. 27 or even a 32 would be perfect.

Yeah, going from the pre-2017 21"/27" options to 24"/32" options would have been an obvious progression.

@Lin
Absolutely. C’mon Apple, release that 32" iMac Pro that’s been rumored since the announcement of the M1 iMac already!

Apple’s best move, in my opinion, would be making the iMac in 27” and 32” sizes and ditching the chin to aesthetically match Apple’s displays. People who want a single-display desktop setup are an incredibly small market in 2024, so most just go with a laptop + dock or Mac Mini over an iMac.

This is so out of touch lol. The vast majority of desktop users have a single screen.

@Winter
The chin is where the logic board and other internal components lie.

So they can’t make it smaller? I’m typing this on an iPhone that has the logic board behind the display, so I think we have the technology.

@Winter
Your smartphone most likely has a stacked logic board, which increases manufacturing costs and contains far less powerful modules. Not to mention, it doesn’t have space for a full-sized fan compared to an iMac. It also does not have a significant resonance chamber for airflow to power large stereo speakers.

Not against the miniaturization idea, but just pointing out facts and consequences of the current iMac design.

@Noor
Literally all of those engineering hurdles have already been overcome in the MacBook Pro. It might have to be slightly thicker than the current model, but 90% of consumers would take more thickness over the chin.

This is what I’m really hoping for. If you can get a Pro chip with enough RAM, it sort of solves the only issue with the all-in-one of the internal components going obsolete so long before the screen. A 32” iMac Pro with the 14 CPU cores and 20 GPU cores M4, 48GB RAM, I could use that for 10+ years as a main home computer and then for the kids.

Or do a 32 inch in the current 27 inch footprint. They know you will love it :smirk:

@Harley
Doing a 32 inch in the 27 inch screen size would be the best.

Negative bezels all around, please. Come on, where’s the courage?

They could probably do a 30” in the same footprint as the old 27” and that would make sense too since the current one is 24”.

I don’t want a 27 or 32” iMac. I appreciate what we have right now. If I wanted a larger display, I’d buy a mini or other desktop Mac and hook it up to a display.

That way I can upgrade the Mac more often without needing to also buy the display.

I’m good with the iMac. It’s a really amazing AIO.

@Jin
At least let users choose the screen size. Mini + display is never as elegant as an iMac.

No, it isn’t as elegant as an iMac, but people asked for it. Now they’re complaining. Unsurprised but irritated by those people.
