Start by upgrading your RAM, and if it has a hard drive, switch to an SSD.

External SSD first, then use OCLP. You can always wipe the SSD and go back to High Sierra if needed. After that, upgrade your RAM. The SSD will make the biggest difference. RAM may not be as noticeable but will still help.
