That’s exactly my point. If I know them, I can ask them to log out. If it’s some random seller, good luck. If it was company property and reported stolen, you’re out of luck.

I’ve bought two Macs from Marketplace, and I ask them to factory reset it. When we meet in person, I check for locks. No lock? I buy. Locked? No thanks.

You can’t lock a Mac later.

It’s totally possible if the MacBook has an MDM profile. If the organization it belongs to marks it as stolen, it will be useless. You can’t get around that screen.

If it’s managed, yes. But it won’t be ‘later’—it will already have a certificate installed from the start and probably won’t boot up at all.
