Apple releases iPhone 16e what do you think

Apple just announced the iPhone 16e. It has:

  • Black or white color options
  • A18 chip
  • C1 modem made by Apple
  • 6.1-inch OLED display with a notch
  • 48MP single camera
  • Action Button
  • Supports Apple Intelligence, including Visual Intelligence
  • Aluminum body
  • Starts at $599 for 128GB

No MagSafe, though. What do you all think?

No MagSafe? That’s disappointing.

Apple probably left it out to push people to buy the regular iPhone 16.

They’re doing what some Android manufacturers do—putting the magnets in the cases instead of the phone. Since most people use a case, Apple saves money by not including MagSafe.

For those who don’t use cases, though, this is annoying.

Probably because budget-conscious buyers don’t use MagSafe much, so it was an easy way to cut costs.

$600 isn’t really budget pricing, though.

$599 seems overpriced. $499 or even $529 would have been better.

Yep, and they’ll keep it at $599 for years while it ages.

This will probably be the free phone on carrier plans before long. Apple priced it this way so people buy the regular iPhone 16 instead.

Apple’s new C1 modem is the real test here. This is their first in-house modem, and it could set the stage for how they move forward.

Once you start using MagSafe, it’s hard to go back. This is a weird omission.

This doesn’t feel like an SE replacement. The SE was supposed to be an affordable way into iOS.

So is this the new SE, or is Apple still making another SE?

This costs €719 in Europe. At that price, you might as well just get a regular iPhone 16.

In the US, this will probably be $199 or even $99 on prepaid carriers in a few months.

€699 in Germany. That’s too much for a ‘budget’ phone.

$900 in Canada? That’s wild.

No MagSafe??? That’s a deal breaker for me.

I don’t know, this doesn’t feel like a great deal. It’s sitting in a weird space between ‘just get a regular iPhone 16’ and ‘it’s not cheap enough to be a budget option.’

That’s the point. Apple doesn’t really want people buying this at full price. It’s there to push them toward the iPhone 16 unless they’re getting it through a carrier deal.
