Apple expanding iPhone licenses to more states… what do you think?

Apple is planning to roll out iPhone driver’s licenses to seven more states. Here’s the list:

  • Montana
  • West Virginia
  • Connecticut
  • Kentucky
  • Mississippi
  • Oklahoma
  • Utah

It will also support Japan’s My Number Card in the future. Thoughts?

Future states joining the feature include the ones listed above. Does anyone know when these will actually roll out?

Be careful about showing your phone to the police. Here’s why.

People bring this up every time, but you don’t need to give your phone to the police or unlock it for this feature.

Isn’t it risky to let the police handle your phone just to show ID?

It works like Apple Pay. You tap your phone on a reader, and it shows what’s being sent. Then you confirm with Face ID or Touch ID. No need to hand over your phone.

@dammy
So you just tap your license on the officer’s reader?

It’s not much different from handing over a physical license. Plus, you can display your ID without unlocking the phone if there’s no reader available.

Cops already have your info if you’re driving a car. This isn’t any different from showing your physical license.

You can open Apple Wallet without unlocking your phone.

Is that really safe though? What stops someone from accessing other things on your phone?

In most states, you can’t even use iPhone driver’s licenses for police. It’s just for TSA right now.

It’s unlikely to be risky in most situations. But I get why people worry. Like, when I use Apple Pay and someone asks to take my phone, it feels weird. I don’t want anyone touching it.

@Axel
Police overreach happens all the time, though. Acting like it’s rare is ignoring the reality.

Connecticut was mentioned early on, but we still don’t have this feature yet. What’s the delay?

Finally, Kentucky is getting something useful. I live here, so it’s good to see.

Glad to be part of something good for a change.

Illinois is making its own app and won’t support Apple Wallet. Law enforcement still asks for a hard copy, so this doesn’t replace carrying your license. Sigh.

Other state apps haven’t been great. I doubt Illinois will do better. Wouldn’t it be better if there was federal support for these things?

@Leith
Yeah, but this is where having 50 different state policies becomes frustrating.

Why not tie it to the REAL ID requirement? That’s already a federal thing.

REAL ID is optional, though. Some people are against sharing their info with the government, even though they already do.
