Anyone else try checking their cat's heart rate with a smartwatch?

Big thanks to Lil Man for being the test kitty!

Didn’t even see the second cat hiding there! Haha.

Yeah, it’s probably not picking up your cat’s real heart rate. A cat’s heart should beat 140-200 times a minute, so the watch is way off.

I tried it on my other cat first, but either her fur is too thick, or she’s too chunky, I’m not sure!

@Zen
Haha, either way, they’re both total sweethearts.

@Zen
The fat doesn’t matter at all. These things measure changes in skin color. Fur doesn’t change color with blood flow, so it won’t work through fur.

Oh wow, I see the second kitty now! I thought it was just a blanket. So cute! :heart_eyes_cat:

Wait, where’s the second cat hiding? :see_no_evil:

@Charlie
I was wondering the same thing until I spotted that cute little nose. Look in between the first kitty’s arms.

I missed the second one too, and I even have a black cat! lol. Sneaky little things.

It’s probably reading the cat’s purr rate instead of the heart rate!

Optical heart rate gadgets need to sense if they’re touching something before reading anything otherwise they’d literally read air. Smartwatches use sensors and algorithms designed for humans, so trying them on pets will give a number, but it won’t mean much.

@Rafe
I’ve always wondered how those things work.

Are they only optical? I thought the crown had something to do with it, or is that just for the ECG? I thought you’d get a better reading if it touched the cat’s skin where you could feel a pulse, but it would still be off, just closer to the real number.

@Weston
You need to touch the crown for an ECG to complete the electrical circuit. It’s an electrocardiogram. The regular heart rate readings are optical.

Has no one pointed out how adorable this little guy is?
