Hello, I’ve been seriously considering a Supernote A5X2 and I’ve researched every product in this category, starting with the remarkable 2 and I keep coming back to “why not just get an iPad?”.
A Supernote nomad (because the A5X and the A5X2 aren’t being sold right now) will cost roughly $800 CAD.
Remarkable 2 is $630
Onyx Boox Note Air 3 is $610
A brand new, current gen iPad with a pencil is $687.
My question is “how do you justify spending this kind of money on a product with really only one advantage and a vast canyon of disadvantages compared to the iPad”. And to be clear, I wouldn’t need the other features of an iPad, I already own a surface pro 7 which acts as my travel computer (and it’s a fantastic little device).
PS. I don’t like apple and I wouldn’t support them even though the iPad does seem like a great tablet.
Also a PSA, I’ve read elsewhere in this forum that people are hearing back from Ratta customer support that the A5X2 is possibly being pushed to Q3 of this year. This thing isn’t coming out people lol
I have a Supernote A6X and an iPad Air M1. I tried using the iPad as a notebook replacement for a year, and been using the Supernote for 2 years. For me, there are two things that holds the iPad back:
-
The tactility of writing on the Supernote screen is awesome. Even with a matte screen, the iPad writing feel is nowhere near as nice. It makes a world of difference when I’m by default a fountain pen guy. Even if you think you don’t currently care about stuff like this, once you try the Supernote, you’ll know why everybody is raving about this particular aspect of the device.

The organization features on Supernote. I write oodles and oodles of notes for first drafts of copies, for meeting notes, etc. The linking, headlines, stars and being able to use linked PDFs as template are all features that allows me to easily jump back and forth between notes and pages, and also makes revising things a heck of a lot easier. There’s simply no equivalent in the AppStore, not even close.
I’m not one to fuss over distraction-free things - I still use my iPad for reading PDFs and as a laptop replacement sometimes with the keyboard, and I just turn off notifications, but YMMV. There’s also something to be said about having one device that does one thing really well.
The screen is a lot less jarring on the eyes for me, but sometimes I do miss having a backlight. Some people can’t stand looking at LCD/OLED screen for reading and note-taking, but YMMV again.
As for durability, I have to baby my iPad. I always feel like one bad bump will dent the aluminum body or crack the screen protector. On the other hand, I don’t feel the need to be so careful with how I use the Supernote, as long as I have the folio cover on. I chuck that thing in my bag and take it with me when I’m out and about.
