The keyboards are comfortable to type on, but they wear out so badly over time. This is my second MacBook Pro, and the same thing happened with both. The butterfly keyboard was even worse since it kept breaking. I can’t even clean it properly—this picture was taken right after I wiped it down. It’s not grease, just worn out. My laptop is only a year old and looks like this.
My keyboard looks the same, and cleaning with alcohol doesn’t help at all.

I’ve kind of just accepted it, but it’s frustrating how the keyboard also makes my screen dirty.
@Niko
Mine’s even worse—it’s starting to wear through the black finish where my wrists rest. I had to put a skin on it to protect it from further damage.
My keyboard looks like that sometimes, but it cleans up perfectly with 70% isopropyl alcohol. Here’s the link if you want to check Apple’s advice: How to clean your Apple products - Apple Support.
Honestly, it kind of does look greasy. I’ve had my MacBook Pro for 6 years, and my keyboard doesn’t look like that. Do you have really acidic fingers?
I don’t see the problem?
If you’re talking about the old scissors mechanism keyboard, I’d agree—it was bad. But the newer ones? They’re great. Just use isopropyl alcohol, and they’ll stay clean.
I think they use ABS plastic for the keycaps. It’s lightweight, thin, and great for backlight visibility, but it does get that shiny, worn-out look over time. I guess it’s a trade-off.
With heavy use, all laptop keyboards wear out eventually. It’s worse if you have oily skin.
My keyboard is fine except the M key is loose. Does anyone here know how to fix it?
Apple replaces keys for free, even if your warranty is over, so it’s not a big deal.
It’s just the colour. The wear and tear shows much more on the black keyboards.
I had the same issue when I first got my MacBook Air. I even tried wearing gloves while typing, but the keys still got shiny. It’s just cheap plastic. I ended up using a dark translucent keyboard cover. It prevents the keys from wearing out too fast, and I actually like the feel of typing with the cover on. It’s also quieter.
MacBooks have the best laptop keyboards. Replacing the keycaps is cheap, and honestly, it’s just a cosmetic issue.

It doesn’t even cost anything since Apple does it for free.

Why am I getting downvoted for saying this?

That’s just how this forum is sometimes.

They feel great to type on, but Apple could have used better plastic for durability.
@Arlen
I don’t know, man. I’ve been using mine for two years, and I do a lot of coding, online courses, and even some writing for fun, and my keyboard doesn’t look like yours. Are you sure you’re not just extra rough on it?
