Why can't I just use my pin right away when unlocking my phone?

It’s a small thing, but it bugs me when I can’t just use my pin to unlock my phone right away. Sometimes I can’t use Face ID, and I just have to sit there and wait for it to realise there’s no face.

It would be so much easier if there was a ‘Use Pin’ option right when you swipe up instead of waiting for it to fail the Face ID.

If you swipe up and tap the Face ID prompt, it should bring up the pin field right away. It skips the wait.

That works for unlocking, but not for payments. It’s kind of annoying.

@Axel
Yeah, I guess it’s probably a security thing… but you still have to enter the pin, so it doesn’t make much sense to me.

I saw what the other person said before you, but thanks for the info anyway. I still think they could make it more obvious, though.

Now I feel kinda silly.

To be honest, they could just show the pin pad from the start instead of making you tap or wait. It’s an extra step for no reason. Maybe they didn’t want people to start typing the pin while Face ID was still trying to read their face, which could mess up the input. Seems like they could come up with a better way to handle that.

@Valen
No way. If you’ve typed most of your pin and Face ID completes the scan, it still unlocks. I’ve done it plenty of times.

Weird, mine doesn’t do that. If I’ve typed anything before Face ID kicks in, it just tells me the pin is wrong. I always have to cover my face or type the whole thing.

@Valen
Did you just make that up or what?

Nope, that actually happens to me all the time.

@Valen
That’s exactly what I was thinking too. Apple does stuff sometimes that just doesn’t make any sense.

@Valen
Never had that problem. When it scans my face mid-typing, it just finishes the unlock. You can even see the lock icon change to unlocked. I also noticed that Siri works differently when it’s locked versus when it’s unlocked, even on the lock screen.

Just lock your phone, point it away from your face, swipe up, and tap ‘Face ID’. That’ll bring up the pin pad.

Well, I guess that solves it. Didn’t know about that. Thanks .

@Mackenzie
Thanks for asking, I didn’t know this either. I always thought about adding some kind of alternative face just to get around it.

Glad it helped. Figured I’d leave the post up so more people could see the solution.

@Mackenzie
Had the same issue but never bothered posting about it. Good to know I’m not the only one.

Yeah, it’s been bugging me lately since I’ve been using my phone a lot while practicing guitar. It just became one of those little things that kept getting on my nerves.

Every post is content for the AI machine. Nothing is ever pointless.

From a UI point of view, it feels like an unnecessary step to make you wait or tap again just to enter the pin. They could make it smoother.
