Trying to upgrade my 2009 MacBook… any tips?

I thought upgrading my old MacBook would be simple, but wow… parts are expensive and hard to find. Anyone else run into this?

I have two of these that were headed for recycling. If you cover shipping, they’re yours. Send me a message.

That’s really kind of you. Respect.

Good on you for helping out.

Check eBay. I’ve found parts for my old Mac Pros and MacBooks there.

Those 4GB DDR2 sticks have always been pricey.

Try OWC. They sometimes have used ones for cheap.

You’re probably looking in the wrong places. OWC has 4GB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz for $59. That’s for the mid-2009 model. I have the late 2009 version with 8GB and an SSD. Runs fine for music and display use. OWC sells 2x4GB for $18.99.

Yeah, 4GB DDR2 isn’t common because most systems had moved to DDR3. I sold one a few years ago for around $40.

Are you sure your 2009 MacBook even takes DDR2?

I don’t think that’s right. I swear it used DDR3.

@Jordy
We’re talking about 2009 laptops, not modern ones.

All 2009 Mac laptops used DDR3, unless I’m missing something?

The early 2009 MacBook (A1181) actually used DDR2.

@Avery
You’re right. Forgot about the early 2009 models that stuck with the old design.

@Jordy
I remember building a PC in 2009 with 16GB of DDR2 and dual SLI GPUs. Ran Guild Wars maxed out.

I have like 8 of these just lying around haha.

Have you considered just getting a newer Mac?

I probably have some of these sitting in a drawer. Didn’t realize they were worth anything!

Like an old car… the rarer it gets, the more expensive the parts.

Try eBay. The price is high just because they’re no longer made.
