Should I Upgrade to the iPhone 16?

What are the good and bad things about the iPhone 16?

I currently have the iPhone 14 running iOS 17.1, and it’s still working great. I’m eligible for an upgrade, but I’m not sure if it’s worth it.

To those using the iPhone 16, thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts.

Good stuff: It has all the new features like better camera controls (even if you don’t use them), the action button, dynamic island, fresh design, cool colours, AI features, etc. For its price, it’s a great choice compared to the Pro models.

Not-so-good: The 60Hz display. But honestly, if you’ve never used 120Hz, you won’t feel like you’re missing much.

What size do you recommend? I heard the Pro version is really big.

The Pro is about 6.3 inches, almost the same as the regular 16. The Pro Max is huge at 6.9 inches.

@Noor
What size do you think is better? I’m quite private and don’t like carrying my phone everywhere. I also like wearing comfy clothes without having my phone stick out.

The bigger size has much better battery life, while the smaller one feels great to hold and is easy to use with one hand.

@Noor
Thanks again for your help.

Also, who adds the new features? Does the carrier handle it, or do I need to take the phone to Apple? Are the updates free?

The features are pre-installed on the phone. You don’t need to do anything.

@Noor
Do you think I should wait for the iPhone 17 in September or just get the iPhone 16 now since the changes might not be huge?

If you can wait, the iPhone 17 might be a better jump from the 14. The 14 is still solid for 2025.

@Noor
Thanks! By the way, what do you do? Are you into tech? You seem to know a lot about iPhones.

I’m an 18-year-old student. I just really like technology, but it’s not my job. Most of what I know is from YouTube and general discussions. A lot of people my age are into this stuff.

@Noor
Every year they release features that remind me of car ads. Like, are coloured door handles really a selling point? Things like the island or the action button—they sound cool, but do they really matter?

Does this stuff actually impress people?

@Rin
The action button and dynamic island do add value, but I agree some features feel unnecessary. For example, camera control could be better—like taking pictures with a simple tap instead of pressing a button. As for colours, I mentioned them because they’re unique and stand out compared to previous models.

If you don’t think these features are worthwhile, what would you want to see in a new phone?

Why are you still on iOS 17.1 and not updating?

I could update to 18.2.1, but I’ve heard that updates can sometimes mess up your phone.

iOS 18 is a big update from 17. Most apps are designed for the latest version, so it’s better to stay updated. Plus, updates include security fixes, which protect your data. I always tell my friends to keep their phones updated for better performance and safety.

@Teo
Got it. I’ll update it today. Thanks for the advice.

Good thing: a new battery. That’s about it.
Bad thing: less money in your wallet.

I switched from the iPhone 14 and honestly didn’t notice much difference except for the battery life.
