Should I choose iMac or Mac Mini

Hi everyone

I’m thinking about getting an iMac or a Mac Mini. I’ve read a lot of posts and seen some videos to figure out which one is better. I know the Mac Mini (M2) is stronger than the iMac (M1) but I’m worried I might miss out on the Apple experience if I use a random monitor with the Mac Mini.

What do you think

Also, I’m not sure if 8GB of RAM will be enough for Adobe programs and coding tasks. I’m currently using a laptop with 16GB of RAM and have had no issues.

Thanks a lot

Get a Dell Ultrasharp 4K or a similar monitor with the Mac Mini and you’ll be all set

I just got the Dell 4K 27-inch last month. It’s really a great choice, I don’t see any big differences

I read a really good blog post, but I can’t find the link right now. It talks about how to choose a third-party monitor for Mac since Apple favors a certain pixel density, not just resolution

@Dezi
Did you mean this one Mac external displays for designers and developers

Yes that’s the one

@Dezi
This is the first time I’m hearing about that. It works great with my 4K monitor

Most people are fine with a 4K monitor and MacOS scales well. One person had a specific issue where their work didn’t show up as expected, so they did some research and found that MacOS is built to work best with a specific pixel density. I can’t remember the details though

Is it bright enough compared to a 27-inch 5K iMac

It’s really bright. I have mine set to 69% brightness

@Harlan
Thanks, I’ll check it out

If you want an All-in-One, you might want to wait for the M3 iMacs which could be announced this fall.

The Mini also seems like a good early M3 option so that’s worth considering.

You could save some money if you get a Mini and a decent 1440p monitor

Thanks a lot for the info! I read about that but I need to make a purchase in the next month so I can’t wait for the new models

What a nice comment Your appreciation puts you on our list for the most thankful users this week on this forum You can see the full list on r/TheGratitudeBot

I just made this choice last week I was deciding between an iMac or Mac Mini with a monitor I went for the stronger Mac Mini with a 24" LG 4K monitor I’m really happy with it. From what I’ve read, this monitor comes closest to the iMac experience you can get. Even with buying a mouse and keyboard, it costs a bit less than an iMac and it’s more powerful.

Monitor: link (and wow it just dropped $30 from when I bought it!)

I also got this to mount the Mini to the monitor: link I’ve only had this setup for a week and I love it so far. I also read the Mac keyboard with fingerprint reader is on sale on Amazon for $150 right now instead of $200 from Apple

@Asher
Isn’t it hard to find the power button every time you turn it on You have to look for it hovering over the monitor

I haven’t really had that much trouble You learn where it is and just hit it by memory after a bit

Mac Mini You will regret losing your nice screen when you switch to another computer

Mac Mini
