Today at school, my Chromebook started making a really loud buzzing sound. I checked and realized it’s coming from the fan area at the bottom. If I tilt it a certain way, the noise stops, so it seems like something might be in the way of the fan. I don’t want to open it up myself and mess anything up. Anyone know how I can fix this without breaking it?
I took down my original post here a while back, but if you’re looking for it, you might be able to find it in the Wayback Machine. Just a heads-up, try using the older version of this forum when searching. Hope that helps!

Thanks, it’s a 550 model, I’ll check it out.
I removed Google Play from mine, and the noise completely stopped.
Just get another Chromebook. I see them as disposable laptops. The Series 3 doesn’t even have a fan!

I just got this one, not planning on buying another Chromebook anytime soon.

Did you just buy it? Is it a 550?

Yeah. I’m 14, so spending a few hundred bucks isn’t exactly ‘disposable’ for me.

I had the same problem with my 550 when I got it! The noise went away after a week or so. It’s probably just tight clearances, I wouldn’t worry about it.

Thanks, I’ll wait a week or two and let you all know.

Did you buy it online? If you got it from a store, you should be able to take it back and tell them it shouldn’t be making that noise, and they might replace it.

Sounds like you got the tricky one.
It could be something got stuck near the fan blades. You might be able to fix it by either gently tapping the laptop, blowing air into the fan, or if you’re comfortable, opening it up and cleaning the fan area with a small brush.
If none of that works, you might need to replace the fan.
