Just bought the Samsung Chromebook on Amazon, got a few questions

  1. Is there any app that’s good for accessing an FTP server and doing some simple html editing? I noticed a few apps for FTP, but the reviews aren’t great.

  2. Can I play xvid or x264 files from an SD card?

  3. Does LogMeIn work on this?

  4. How are people liking their Chromebook so far?

  5. Any idea when Amazon might ship mine?

  1. Try looking in the Chrome Web Store. There’s one called ShiftEdit that might do what you need.

  2. Chrome OS is based on Linux, and with some skill, you could tweak it to play different formats. But a simpler option might be to convert your videos and store them on Google Drive. You can play them from there. Plus, services like Netflix and Hulu Plus work great.

  3. Chrome Remote Desktop works really well and you can use it on most computers with Chrome installed.

  4. I can’t go back to a regular laptop after using this.

  5. No idea.

  6. Microsoft Word and Excel do work, just sign up for a free Microsoft account.

  7. Google Music lets you upload 20,000 songs, plus you have iHeartRadio and Shoutcast for even more music options.

  8. Google Hangouts works for video calls with up to 9 people.

  9. Google Voice lets you make calls and send texts from your Chromebook.

  10. Google Cloud Print works with printers that support cloud printing, like HP ePrint.

  11. If you ever need to reset your Chromebook, check out this page for instructions.

Mostly Netflix, this forum, schoolwork, games, Mog… what else do people need a laptop for?

  1. Press Ctrl+Alt+t to bring up the “crosh” shell, then I just use ssh to connect to the servers I need. Not sure if that helps, but that’s what I do.
  2. I’m not sure.
  3. Yes, LogMeIn works.
  4. I love mine! Though sometimes I wish it could do a bit more, like a MacBook Air.
  5. I ordered mine from Amazon and even without an estimated date, it came in just under two weeks. Your experience might vary though.
