Issue: found this 2012 MacBook Pro in the trash, and when booted it gave me the question mark. I replaced the drive and it doesn’t even recognize it in the recovery mode disk utility. Any ideas?

@Corey
Yeah you wonder what they were thinking when they designed it

The disk that it’s showing doesn’t appear to be the hard drive. It’s like some kind of base system and I can’t do anything to it from disk utility.

That’s just installer image not internal drive.

Hard drive cable is a very very common thing to fail.

Had this problem a couple years ago with my 2012 MacBook Pro. Took it to the Apple store and they replaced it for free. They said there was a recall on the part.

Under $10 on Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06Y43G2MH

I’ve had to replace my mid-2012’s HDD cable 3 times now. Even though it’s a recalled item that Apple was replacing for free (not sure if they’d still do that now but…), never bothered taking it to them cuz the cable itself was so cheap to replace myself.

That mid-2012 13" is still a fantastic laptop. Still rocking mine after 9 years :upside_down_face: upgraded to 16GB RAM and an SSD, still runs smooth for day to day stuff and normal office work.

In this case go to ifixit and look for the cable. It will probably be under 20$

The cable on mine failed after I replaced the hard drive. I got a factory replacement from OWC computers online for about $8.00. Definitely worth fixing.

And maybe it’s drive is still fine

If it recognizes an external drive but not the internal one then the ribbon cable is most likely damaged.

Just saw a post about this the other day, apparently the ribbon cable going bad is common in this year/model. I believe the post said it was a known thing and covered as a recall? If that’s the case I’d take it to a Mac store and see what they say.

On the 2012, the SATA cable is SOO common to go bad. It’s a super simple fix!

It looks like a Non-Retina

If replacing the SATA cable works (as others have suggested) and the laptop is in good condition overall, then…

  • installing an SSD, and
  • upgrading to 16 GB RAM

will give you a decent machine.

@Winter
And take the fan out and make sure there’s no big dust bunnies stuck in it!

@Winter
That’s what I’m running and it’s still kicking

Great machines! I rocked a late 2011 with SSD and 16 GB RAM for a while.

This is my wife’s current config, and it flies on Catalina. Well worth resurrecting!

Can do even Monterey with a bit of work!
