My girlfriend was in a car accident and her Apple Watch tried to call 911 but ended up dialing 119 instead. The call didn’t go through. Should I report this to someone?
Yes, I remember seeing a similar post a while back. In that case, the person who posted this had visited Japan or somewhere in Asia where 119 is the emergency number. Their iPhone didn’t switch back to 911 for some reason. You should contact Apple support and let them know. This feature is supposed to work perfectly every time, so this is a big mistake.
Edit: Here’s the other post I was talking about: link.
119 is the emergency number for Japan and South Korea.
That’s strange. I’ve worked at a 911 call center in the US for five years. One night, when it was quiet, I tried dialing 999, 112, and 110. All of them connected to 911. I wonder why it didn’t work in her case.
112 is the global standard for mobile devices. The SIM card tells the phone which emergency number to use. In Australia, most phones are set up to call 911, 000, or 112.
Shouldn’t it dial 112? I thought that was the universal emergency number for mobile phones worldwide. Some countries use 112 for landlines too, but I thought it worked on mobiles everywhere.
You can also send feedback to Apple here: Apple Feedback.
What’s 119?

Different countries have different emergency numbers. For example, New Zealand uses 111.
I crashed my bike two days ago, and the crash detection didn’t work at all.

I’ve had two bike crashes. One was minor, and the watch started to alert me. The other was more serious, and it didn’t. In the minor crash, I was going slow, fell, and stayed down until I noticed the watch was about to call 911. In the serious crash, I was going fast, flew over the handlebars, and got hurt badly enough to go to the ER. But I was upright right after the crash, so maybe that’s why it didn’t trigger.
@Mica
My crash last Friday didn’t trigger it either. I broke my femur after hitting the ground hard. Kind of annoying that the watch didn’t do anything, especially since it’s gone off for smaller falls before.
@Paxton
Do you have the feature turned on? It’s off by default.

It’s always been on. It’s gone off before when I’ve slammed the table in anger. But this time, with a big crash, nothing happened.
@Paxton
The feature is meant to call 911 when you can’t, like if you’re unconscious or can’t move. It’s not supposed to activate just because you fell or crashed.

I know what it’s for. I’ve had it ask if I’m okay after smaller falls. This time, with a serious crash, it didn’t do anything. That’s what’s frustrating.
@Paxton
If you know what it’s for, why are you upset it didn’t go off just because you broke your femur?

I crashed hard and hit the ground. It didn’t detect the fall. It’s gone off for smaller things before, so it’s annoying it didn’t work this time.
@Paxton
The feature isn’t about how hard you fell. It’s about whether you can call for help or not. If you’re able to move or call, it shouldn’t activate.
