Can I swim with my Apple Watch… What about saltwater?

Hey everyone, my Series 10 is arriving this Friday, and I want to know how safe it is around water. Can I swim with it in a pool? What about the ocean? Will saltwater cause any problems?

It’s built for swimming and even has a depth gauge that works up to 20 feet. It also has a water temperature sensor. Works fine in both pools and the ocean.

I know the Ultra has the depth and temp sensors, but does the Series 10 have them too?

Yeah, Apple made a big deal about it during the launch. You can check the official specs, but it definitely has them.

I swim in both pools and the ocean twice a week, and my watch holds up fine. The only thing I’ve noticed is that saltwater can make the crown feel sticky, but rinsing it in fresh water fixes it right away. I thought sand got stuck in it once, but it was just dried salt.

Check Apple’s website—it has all the details you need: https://www.apple.com/sg/apple-watch-series-10/specs/

I’ve taken both a Series 7 and an Ultra 2 into the ocean, and they handled the saltwater just fine.

Never had a problem with my old Series 4 or my current Ultra 1 in pools or the ocean.

I shower with my Apple Watch every day and swim in the ocean at least once a week in summer. Had my Series 6 for three years with no issues, and now I’m using an Ultra 2—still no problems.

It’s not actually waterproof, it’s water-resistant. Apple says water resistance isn’t permanent and can wear down over time. You should avoid things like:

  • Dropping it or hitting it against hard surfaces
  • Exposing it to soaps, perfumes, lotions, or sunscreen
  • Taking it water skiing or deep diving
  • Using it in steam rooms or saunas

So yeah, it’s fine for swimming, but don’t push it too hard. More details here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/109522

Some people say it’s water-resistant, others say it’s waterproof… which one is it really?

The Series 10 is actually less waterproof than the older models.

Got any proof to back that up? Because from what I’ve seen, the specs are the same unless you’re comparing it to the Ultra models, which are in a different category.

If by ‘older models’ you mean the Ultra, then sure. The Ultra is rated for 100 meters under ISO 22810.

The Series 10, just like the 9, 8, 7, SE, 6, 5, 4, 3, and 2, is rated for 50 meters under the same ISO standard.

Apple says:

“This means they can be used for swimming in a pool or the ocean. However, they should not be used for scuba diving, water skiing, or activities involving high-velocity water or deep submersion.”

So unless you’re doing extreme water sports, it’s fine. The only models with weaker resistance were the Series 1 and the original, which were only splashproof.
