Anyone know what this weird pattern on my iPhone screen is?

I tried resetting my phone, but the pattern is still there, so I think it’s damaged. The weird thing is, I have no idea how it happened. Last time I checked, the screen was fine, and the phone has just been sitting in a cabinet. Has anyone seen this kind of damage before? If I open it up, can I clean it from the inside?

That looks like an iPhone 5c with water damage.

But how though? It’s just been sitting there. Never dropped it in water.

Where exactly has it been sitting? Moisture can build up over time.

@Kai
It was in a kitchen cabinet and for a while in a bathroom cabinet. It looked fine when I took it out of the bathroom, but I guess it got worse over time.

If it was in a bathroom with a shower, it makes sense. Every time someone showers, condensation builds up, and that moisture can get inside the phone.

Yeah, that’s probably the issue. Bathrooms get really steamy.

Moisture damage can happen just from temperature changes. If the phone isn’t being used, it doesn’t generate heat from the battery, so condensation can build up inside when temperatures fluctuate.

@Maxwell
Ah yeah, that makes sense. I live in Sweden, so it probably went from room temperature to like -10 outside.

Do these screens delaminate? Either way, that display is definitely messed up. Looks like an iPhone 5c by the way.

Not sure what’s going on here, but it would make a cool wallpaper.

Saving this. Gonna try making a wallpaper out of it.

That’s definitely water damage.

You should try putting it in rice…

Did it ever get really cold? I’ve never seen this on a phone before, but it looks a bit like frozen liquid crystals.

It’s just been inside in a drawer, so I don’t think so.

@OliverQueen
Could be a battery leak. I’d be careful. Liquid damage doesn’t always come from outside; sometimes, it’s internal.

Damn, okay. Definitely not giving it to my little sister if there’s even a small chance it’s dangerous.

It’s a hardware issue, not software. A reset won’t fix that.
