Anyone else going from iPhone SE to iPhone 16 Pro Max?

I had an iPhone SE (2nd Gen) with 64GB, and it ran out of space, so I decided to upgrade. Now I have the 16 Pro Max. The biggest issue I’ve noticed is that iOS 18 feels a bit laggy. The camera is a huge improvement, though.

The only thing you’ve noticed is lag? Do you mean the only bad thing? Because compared to the SE, you got a lot more features.

To be fair, the iPhone SE (2nd Gen) is already running iOS 18, so most of the new features were already on their old phone.

@Zephyr
Yeah, but my SE had no storage left. That’s why I upgraded.

Yeah, 64GB is rough… iOS takes up a lot of space. What exactly do you mean by iOS 18 lagging on the 16 Pro Max?

@Zephyr
When I open the camera, I just get a black screen. I have to restart the app a few times. Sometimes it freezes. When I take a photo, there’s a 5-second delay. Swiping the screen can take 3 seconds to respond. There’s another post about how iOS 18.3 is laggy too.

@Rohan
I haven’t had any of those issues on my 16 Pro Max. You might need to get it checked. Are you using tinted icons?

If I restart the phone, everything works fine. And yeah, I do use tinted icons.

@Rohan
Try turning off tinted icons. It should fix the swipe lag, but I’m not sure if it’ll fix everything else. Let me know if it helps.

Alright, I’ll try that. Thanks.

@Rohan
No problem, enjoy your new phone.

@Rohan
I have the exact same issue on my iPhone 16! It’s so annoying. I’ll be with friends trying to take pictures, and the camera just shows a black screen with the UI still visible. This happens when opening from the home screen, but it’s even worse from the lock screen. Snapchat freezes for a few seconds when opening the camera, and WhatsApp often says ‘cannot start camera’ with a green screen. It’s disappointing for a brand-new phone.

@Vail
Yeah, it feels like a downgrade because of the software issues.

@Vail
Try turning off AI features. I think the camera is struggling to load them properly.

For the price of a 16 Pro Max, you could’ve bought an 8TB NVMe and still had money left over.

Fair point.

@Zephyr
Oh yeah, I should’ve specified—features not including Apple Intelligence.

Right, because that’s the one missing feature that OP didn’t even mention or seem to care about. I’m sure they’ll be heartbroken to know their SE can’t do AI.

Yeah, it’s a huge upgrade, no doubt. But the software issues are frustrating. And Apple Intelligence isn’t even available yet, even though that was the big selling point. Other than that, I’m happy with it.

@Rohan
What software issues? My phone is fine. Maybe it’s just the first week while it settles in. I turned Apple Intelligence off—I can’t stand AI, except for Waymo when I need a ride after a night out.
